The red-clay ksar of Ait Ben Haddou rises above a palm-lined valley, its fortified walls and towers largely unchanged since it was built along the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech.
Boumalne Dades to Merzouga
Todra Gorge’s 300-meter limestone walls make for an early highlight, reached by a short walk along the riverbed. The landscape flattens and turns to palm groves approaching Erfoud, known for its fossil beds and marble — this region was once an ocean floor.
In Rissani, a souk that has served the region since the 8th century runs Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with few tourists in sight on any of those days. From there, it’s on to Merzouga, where camels carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes to a desert camp for dinner, music, and the night.

Honestly: long. Day 1 and Day 3 each involve around 7-8 hours on the road, including stops. The route itself is part of the appeal — the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and the Dades and Todra gorges are some of the most dramatic driving in Morocco — but this isn’t a relaxed, short-hop itinerary.
What should I pack?
Layers. Days are warm, especially in the desert, but nights at the camp get cold, even in summer. Bring a scarf or headwrap for sand and sun, comfortable closed shoes for the dunes, and a light jacket for the evening.
